Overview
An avuncular test estimates whether a child is biologically related to an alleged aunt or uncle. It's useful when an alleged parent isn't available but their sibling is. Including the child's known parent (for example, the mother) strengthens the result.
Avuncular relationships are reported as a likelihood. This is a private, peace-of-mind test — it is not chain-of-custody and not admissible in court.
How avuncular testing works
An avuncular test estimates the biological relationship between a child and an alleged aunt or uncle — the sibling of an alleged parent. It is most often used when the alleged father (or mother) is not available to test, so their brother or sister is tested instead to estimate the relationship indirectly.
Because it compares a child to a parent's sibling rather than to the parent directly, the result is reported as a probability rather than a simple yes or no. It is expressed as a relationship likelihood, and including the child's known parent (for example, the mother) makes that estimate stronger and more conclusive.
This is a private, peace-of-mind test for personal information only. It is not chain-of-custody and is not admissible in court or for immigration.

Accuracy & methodology
Avuncular testing reports a combined relationship index and probability rather than a fixed percentage. Including the child's known parent improves conclusiveness. The lab may recommend additional samples for borderline results. Testing is performed by our accredited partner laboratory.
Testing is performed by our AABB-accredited partner laboratory.
Your privacy & trust
Your privacy matters to us, and DNA information is among the most sensitive personal data there is.
- Samples are used only to perform the test you ordered and are destroyed after testing is complete. <!-- TODO: confirm exact sample-retention window with fulfillment lab before publishing -->

Frequently asked questions
- When would I choose an avuncular test?
- When the alleged father (or mother) isn't available but their brother or sister is. The sibling's DNA helps estimate the relationship indirectly.
- Can I use this legally?
- No. It is for personal information only and is not admissible in court or for immigration.

Need a legal DNA test?
Need results for a custody case, child support, immigration, or any other legal matter? An at-home test cannot be used for those purposes. You'll need a court-approved, chain-of-custody DNA test performed through an accredited laboratory, where a neutral third party verifies every participant's identity and handles the samples.
